LetsGoDigital, a Dutch technology blog, has just revealed a patent for OPPO’s new 5G folding screen smartphone. As you can see from the figure, it uses a flip-top folding screen scheme similar to Moto Razr, but still has some features in detail. In fact, as early as 2019, the company has already demonstrated a folding screen prototype, but at that time felt that the best time to launch, the added value to users is more limited.

Even so, the company filed a number of patents for folding-screen smartphone designs in the months that followed, such as a new scheme based on a flat-panel folding screen and pop-up camera.

In February this year, OPPO filed the “collapsible terminal device” patent with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and officially announced it on September 3, 2020.

The hinge design of the machine is mainly mentioned in the 41-page document. Compared with the extroversive folding scheme, the inner folding can better protect the flexible screen when stored, but the design requirements of mechanical structures such as hinges are also higher.

Rotating hinges with gears and a pair of covers support the flexible screen on both sides and allow the housing to slide out relative to the cover.

The clever design improves the durability of the device by complementing the length difference between the screen and the housing when it is folded and stretched.

In addition, the hinges are slightly wider than the device body and highlight a small piece, guessing that the device can be fixed at all angles, similar to the Flex mode of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip folding screen smartphone.

Finally, this 5G flip-top folding screen device promises to keep the thickness to an amazing level. If you can also support a 65W SuperVOOC 2.0 flash charge, it will obviously be more attractive to users.
