Google is preparing to launch Nest Thermostat, which supports gesture control, for $129 and is aggressive, according to people familiar with the matter. New thermostats will go on sale in the coming weeks. The existing Nest flagship thermostat is priced at $249 and nest Thermostat E is priced at $169, and like the current low-end version, the new product uses a plastic case instead of metal.
In the new thermostat, Google will replace some touch controls with gesture control technology. Inside the thermostat is a propagator, which is a bit like the Soli system built into Google’s Pixel 4 phone, where sensors recognize user gestures.
Google now appears intent on introducing lower-cost hardware, with cheaper Pixel phones already available last year and a reduction in the flagship Pixel configuration this year to $699 for the Pixel 5, $100 less than the Pixel 4. Google’s recent Nest Audio speaker also costs just $99, which is lower than many competing products.
The new thermostat, priced at $129, is attractive and will be more competitive with similar products from Honeywell and Ecobee.
