Titan is the largest moon orbiting Saturn, and NASA has released its first map of Titan’ global. The map shows a world of dunes, lakes, plains, craters, and other terrains. Titan is important to scientists because it is the only known planet in the solar system with a stable liquid other than Earth.
However, the liquid on Titan is not water, but methane and ethane hydrocarbon liquids, which are gases on Earth, but in Titan’s cold, they act like liquids. Scientists say methane-based active hydrological cycles have created complex geological landscapes.
NASA says Titan’s surface is one of the most geologically diverse in the solar system. Scientists used data collected from NASA’s Titan probe Cassini mission from 2004 to 2017. The spacecraft has flown more than 120 Titan flights. Data from the Cassini radar imager penetrates an opaque atmosphere made up of nitrogen and methane. Despite the huge differences between the two, there are similar characteristics between Titan and Earth. The map shows that Titan has different geological terrain, clear latitude distribution slots around the globe, and some terrains cover more ground than others.
