Facebook has asked New York University to shut down its political ad targeting research program.

Facebook has asked New York University to shut down its political ad targeting research program.

In an October 16 letter to the New York University Advertising Watch Program, Facebook said the program violated its terms of service that prohibit “massive data collection from its website.”

After the opacity of political ads in the 2016 presidential campaign sparked outrage, Facebook added the platform’s ad archive, which includes information such as who paid for the ads, when they were available, and the geographic location of viewers, but the library did not include target user information for ad targeting.
