American satirical musician Tom Lear has announced that he will put all his songs in the public domain.

American satirical musician Tom Lear has announced that he will put all his songs in the public domain.

Lehrer’s songs are understood to deal with nuclear weapons, racial inequality, pollution and Wernher von Braun, a Nazi engineer-to-NASA scientist.

Abby North, CEO of North Music Group, a music rights management company, says copyright owners are often in no hurry to put their work in the public domain. “Because we all have families, and many of these copyrights have protected multiple families for generations.”

“Dickens’s work, (Mark) Twain’s work, Shakespeare’s work, the Bible — they’re all important to us because they belong to us and we can create our own versions.”
