According tomedia Engadget, the Apple Watch may be the key to solving nightmare-related sleep problems. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the sale of an Apple Watch app called KnightWare, which helps treat nightmares caused by diseases such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The system uses the smartwatch’s motion and heart rate data to detect when a user has nightmares and vibrates the wristband in response, waking up the user to interrupt nightmares and maintain sleep.
NightWare only needs a prescription, and the company stresses that this is not a stand-alone treatment. It is part of a larger strategy, including drug treatment. The company also warned users not to try the Apple Watch therapy if they are “behavioural” during sleep.
The FDA said a study showed that participants treated with KnightWare had better sleep quality than the control group. It is considered low-risk and may be useful if existing treatments are not sufficient. It also suggests that smartwatches of the future will not only track sleep, but also help improve the quality of people’s rest on a regular basis.
