For the browser market, Microsoft has taken the “join them if you can’t beat them”. The latest share report on the browser market suggests that this seems to be good for Microsoft. Instead of using the new source code to develop a browser, Microsoft decided to use the Chrome core to build edge browsers, an open source project led by Google and contributed by companies such as Intel and Nvidia.
But Chrome has its own problems, including poor battery management and memory management, and Microsoft has been working on new features to change that. Since November, 161 engineers from Microsoft’s Edge team have submitted more than 1,835 open source projects to Chrome, according to new data. Microsoft has worked in battery, memory, performance, privacy, layout, media playback, HTML form control, and more. Microsoft’s contribution to Chrome has brought benefits to browsers such as Edge and Google Chrome.
It’s worth noting that Microsoft has also made improvements to Windows 10 to help the Chrome platform. For example, Microsoft provided TheSegmentHeap feature in the May 2020 update of Windows 10 to reduce memory usage among all browsers. Microsoft is still actively contributing new features to Chrome. In fact, code submissions released earlier today show that the tech giant plans to improve browser security by increasing permissions in new ways.
These changes benefit not only Microsoft Edge, but also Chrome. Microsoft even fixed a problem specific to Google Chrome. Microsoft, for example, has modified Chrome to help Google Chrome correct how its notifications work with Windows 10 Action Center.
