Falling sales: LG Innotek announces closure of printed circuit board business at end of year

The PCB is a printed circuit board, and it can be seen in most electronic products today. However, reports from South Korean media said LG Innotek, LG’s electronics manufacturing unit, disclosed in regulatory filings that it was due to close its PCB business on December 31 stilettos because of falling sales. LG said the PCB business would strategically give way to the semiconductor business.

LG Innotek’s PCB business is worth 247.5 billion won ($1.47 billion) a year, representing only 3.1 percent of total revenue, according to the data.

Analysts say LG Innotek’s PCB sales rely on brother companies, especially smart machines. This year, LG Innotek produced about 156,000 PCBs, less than 30% of its annual output between 2013 and 2016, and the plant’s operating rate fell to about 51%.
