Should JavaScript be renamed?

Twenty-five years after its birth, the JavaScript language still confuses many people. So the old question is: Should it be renamed? Proponents of the call for a name change cite a number of reasons, including that JavaScript is intended to refer to a subset of ECMAScript.

However, it is often referred to as a number of different ECMAScript supersets in use; JavaScript is a trademark of Oracle, which does not match JavaScript’s identity as a core component of the Web platform.

The Web platform is built on open technology and standards; JavaScript doesn’t even have an official logo; JavaScript has nothing to do with Java, which for decades has confused non-technical people.
