According tomedia reports, BMW decided in early 2018 to start offering CarPlay access to BMW customers for a fee that is not a one-time fee but a subscription. Owners pay $80 a year to get access to CarPlay after the first year of owning a BMW. However, other carmakers have not adopted the same monthly fee scheme as BMW, which is why BMW’s scheme is unpopular with consumers.
Now, the company has decided to make an adjustment — a one-time fee of $300.
According to a BMW spokesman, the company will provide carPlay free of charge for all models with the latest ConnectedDrive infotainment system installed in the future.
But if bmws such as i3 and i8 are not installed with the latest system, they will only have to pay a one-time upgrade fee to get carPlay to use.
In the future, BMW may offer CarPlay free of charge.
However, it is unclear whether BMW customers who have already purchased a CarPlay subscription will stop paying, nor will there be a message that BMW will compensate customers who have already paid for their CarPlay subscriptions over the long term.
