Apple pushes at least 80 million 5G phones next year

BEIJING, Oct. 30 (Xinhua) — Apple is mobilising its suppliers to produce its first 5G phones next year in an effort to regain the title of “the world’s most innovative technology company,” the Nikkei Review said today, citing people familiar with the matter.

Apple will launch three 5G iPhones next year, the report said. In addition to supporting 5G, the three phones will feature the world’s most advanced mobile processors, as well as technology-leading screens. With these three flagship phones, Apple hopes to overtake Huawei and regain the crown of the world’s second-largest handset maker.

In the 5G mobile phone market, Apple’s movements are relatively slow. Competitors such as Samsung, Huawei, OPPO and Xiaomi have all launched 5G handsets. But with major product line changes in 2020, including the introduction of a 5G phone, Apple will return to its old ways and the iPhone will once again be an “essential product” for consumers, people familiar with the matter said.

Apple plans to ship at least 80m new 5G phones, one person familiar with the matter said. “This will be Apple’s first 5G iPhone, which will have three models, and Apple has set aggressive sales targets,” the person said. ”

Analysts say Apple’s influence in the consumer market will help accelerate the popularity of 5G after the 5G iPhone. Apple’s annual shipments of new iPhones typically between 75 million and 80 million.

It is estimated that 206 million new 5G handsets will be produced globally by 2020, accounting for about 18% of all new smartphone sales. The GSMA estimates that China will have 600 million 5G mobile phone users by 2025, accounting for about 40% of the world’s total.

According to previous media reports, Apple’s three iPhones to be released next year will use Qualcomm’s 5G chip. But at the same time, Apple is developing 5G Modem chips, which could be used on the iPhone and iPad as soon as 2022.
