Honda may be preparing to take a big step forward in self-driving technology as early as next year, media reported. The company plans to launch level 3 self-driving systems in Its Legend sedan in Japan next year. It is speculated that the technology will allow drivers to take their hands off the steering wheel and even without looking at the road while driving.
In SAE’s self-driving system, however, once a problem car has to hand back control to a human driver – which is one reason many companies skip this level and upgrade directly to Level 4.
Honda did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the report. But a representative for the car company’s luxury car division, Acura, did not comment directly on the self-driving cars mentioned in the report, noting that the time was in line with the company’s goal of producing self-driving technology by 2020.
