Netflix is likely to have an average of one new original TV series or movie launched every day in 2019, according tomedia. The streaming giant has launched 371 new TV series and movies in the U.S. this year, according to Variety Insight. That’s a 54.6 percent increase from the 240 TV series and movies netflix released on Netflix in 2018. By contrast, that figure exceeds the number of original TV dramas released by the entire U.S. television industry in 2005.
In this analysis, the types included are documentaries, adult animation, alternative TV shows (i.e. no script), comedy, drama, news, and interviews. The number also includes all films released on Netflix, including 30 limited-release films. Of the 371 films, only a quarter were made by Netflix in overseas markets.
That was also a good time at the Golden Globes, where Netflix is understood to have received 34 nominations, a 2.6-fold increase from last year. The broadcaster didn’t get a single nomination this year, suggesting that Netflix is overtaking them, and that it’s traditionally the latter’s own game.
Next year, Netflix will face stiffer competition from HBO Max, Quibi and Peacock, and they are likely to increase production again. Netflix’s original film and television productions next year are likely to exceed 400.
