Facebook is developing its own operating system to replace Android, according to Android Authority. It’s no secret that Facebook’s self-developed operating system, portal smart displays and Oculus VR headsets, are all running custom versions of Android, but Facebook wants to replace it with “Facebook OS.”
Note that Facebook OS is not the final name of the operating system. Facebook has begun work on new OS development to eliminate reliance on Android, media reported. One of the project’s leaders is Mark Lucovsky, a former Microsoft employee who was in charge of Windows NT.
In an interview with The Verge, Ficus Kirkpatrick, Facebook’s head of AR and VR programs, suggested that Facebook was working on a self-study OS project without relying on Android.
Facebook hopes to create a closed-loop ecosystem like Apple’s, the report said. Specifically, Facebook wants to take control of the entire ecosystem, including hardware design, chips, operating systems and every aspect of Facebook’s control.
