Facebook is currently in talks to introduce music videos from major record labels to its video platform, Watch, according tomedia reports. The company is understood to be in talks with big record labels, including Sony Music and Universal Music Group, to offer them an alternative to Google’s YouTube platform. Facebook has begun testing the music video service in smaller foreign markets such as Thailand and India, the sources said.
While it remains to be seen whether Facebook Watch poses a threat to YouTube, the latter’s huge market share has allowed it to adopt some terms that have been less satisfying for creators. If some record companies are willing to give Facebook Watch a chance — if the terms of the deal are enough , that could change that.
For Facebook, while Watch may not be as popular as YouTube, it means that a deal with a record label could bring a lot of new users to Facebook, given that music videos have been a major source of traffic to YouTube.
