According to MIT researchers, odorous and flammable phosphated hydrogen gas is produced by a life form that does not require oxygen to survive. These creatures have proved to be the only material capable of producing gas on rocky planets, which could make it easier to detect extraterrestrial life.

According to a newly published study, phosphated hydrogen can only be produced by anaerobic organisms (organisms that do not need oxygen), meaning that the gas detected on other planets may be a reliable signal that it contains alien son. Hydrogen phosphate is called “pure biological features”, meaning its existence is a signal that a particular form of life already exists – a form that is completely different from most living things on Earth.

The study claims that telescopes such as the James Webb Space Telescope can detect large levels of high levels of phosphated hydrogen produced on planets at a distance of up to 16 light-years. Unlike oxygen, which is produced by a variety of substances other than life, detecting phosphated hydrogen on different rocky planets (as opposed to gas giant planets) is essentially a perfect proof of extraterrestrial life.

The study’s lead author, Clara Sousa-Silva of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, who is working on bio-identity molecules, said the discovery could help lead to the discovery of life on other planets. Of the more than 16,000 candidates, phosphated hydrogen is unique. The team’s new study suggests that detecting the molecule on a rocky planet would mean the presence of some type of anaerobic organism.
