GoPro today unveiled a new Light Mod accessory for the HERO8 Black Sports Digital Camera. This accessory is a removable flash that can be mounted on top of the HERO8 Black and operates in the same way that a conventional flash accessory is installed with a hot shoe and a SLR camera. The new accessory, which went on sale in the U.S. just before Christmas, retails for $49.99 and is scheduled to be available to other markets around the world “in the coming weeks.”
This Light Mod accessory is compatible with existing GoPro brackets, including Magnetic Swivel Clip, The Handler and Head Strap. The accessory has 4 levels of brightness and strobe to illuminate objects in dim outdoor environments or to be used as a beacon.
Like the motion camera, this new lighting accessory doesn’t offer much brightness, with a maximum of 200 lumens. The accessory is 33 feet water resistant and durable, with six hours of running time and a built-in rechargeable battery. The battery’s running time ultimately depends on the brightness. For example, in the case of 125 lumens, the user can expect to use one hour. A maximum of 200 lumens is called “overload mode” and can only run for 30 seconds at a time. Without the included diffuser, the temperature of the light is 5000K and the CRI is 90 plus.
