Loongson Hu Weiwu: China’s information industry should be independent of Wintel and ARM-Android

The development of domestic CPU has reached a new milestone! On December 24, Loongson Science and Technology held the 2019 Loongson New Product Launch and User Conference at the National Convention Center in Beijing, and launched Loongson’s next-generation universal CPU product, 3A4000/3B4000. According to reports, Loongson 3A4000/3B4000 using the same 28nm process as the previous generation product 3A3000/3B3000, using Loongson’s latest development of a new generation processor core GS464V, main frequency 1.8GHz-2.0GHz, SPEC2006 fixed-point and floating point single-core fraction value are more than two generations of products.

According to Loongson Chairman and Chief Architect Hu Weiwu, the 3A4000 general processing performance is comparable to AMD’s 28nm process final product “excavator” processor.

Much of Loongson’s achievements have encouraged Loongson’s development, but some have expressed confusion or even dissatisfaction with Loongson, in part because Loongson chose to develop his own set of instructions – early buy-out of MIPS instruction sets. It is now self-developing instruction sets and architectures.

This has led to The Loongson having to build its own ecosystem, from hardware circuits to kernels, from compilers to operating systems and applications, and Loongson is currently in a team of more than 200 people, so Loongson’s growth is relatively slow.

Dr. Hu Weiwu explained this problem at the launch, saying that the fundamental way out of China’s information industry lies in the establishment of a third ecosystem independent of the WIntel and ARM-Android systems. To this end, Loongson provides open source basic operating system to support downstream operating system enterprises, machine equipment enterprises, solution enterprises to launch the product version of the operating system.

Loongson achieves cross-board compatibility and CPU intergenerational compatibility through the basic operating system unified system architecture, and realizes the compatibility of applications in different machine platforms.

At this launch, Loongson Branch released the standard specification system of unified system architecture and established the product certification system by signing certification agreements with OEM/ODM manufacturers. From Loongson 3A4000/3B4000, neither the Loongson CPU and motherboard upgrades affect the compatibility of the operating system and applications.
