Russia says first deployment of hypersonic weapons

Russian President Vladimir Putin said Tuesday that Russia has gained a leading position in new weapons, making it the only country in the world to deploy hypersonic weapons. For the first time in history, Russia is now a world leader in developing new weapons, and in the past Russia has been catching up with the United States.

Putin said Russia’s first high-speed missile ground-based mobile launch equipment is about to enter service. He said the first launch vehicle equipped with the new hypersonic missile Avant-garde will enter service this month, while the air-launched Kinzhal hypersonic missile is already equipped with troops.

The two advanced weapons were mentioned for the first time by Putin in his 2018 State of the Union address. At the time, Putin said the avant-garde hypersonic missiles could fly at 20 times the speed of sound in the atmosphere. He also said the missile could shift its trajectory and altitude to break through any existing missile defense system hitting its target.
