In recent times, the update of Win10 made people panic, the new features did not see much, the problem is up and down. Often an old bug is done, and a bunch of new bugs are brought in. Recently, ZTE new fulcrum, depth, China Electronics Group, Chengmei Technology and other four domestic operating system manufacturers, jointly launched a unified operating system (UOS), used to break the monopoly barriers of foreign operating systems.
Say this domestic operating system, the industry has so far made efforts in this regard is not less, but each time has not become the mainstream of the consumer market. So how will the UOS do this time? Small editor specifically made a first-hand experience!
Domestic UOS operating system experience
1. Registration and download
Since it is still in an earlier version, the official did not directly give the download link, but set a participant condition: you must first register an account on the official website (https://www.chinauos.com) and submit an in-house application before downloading it. But this audit is a long time, but also must use the enterprise mailbox registration, anxious small partners can also directly to the internet to download the leaked image!
You need to apply for an internal test before you can download it! But the audit time… Super long !!!
Currently, UOS is divided into x86 (suitable for Intel or AMD CPU users), MIPS (Loongson user), ARM (smartphone user) three versions. For our average user, select x86. The entire mirror package is 2.12GB in volume, slightly smaller than the Win10, basic ally and Win7/8 at one level.
2. Installation details
UOS is built on the Linux kernel, so it is not recommended to install on a physical machine for small partners with little hands-on capabilities, where the virtual machine VMWare is used for the installation experience.
UOS is a Linux kernel and is not recommended for installation on real machines
Virtual machine configuration does not have too many requirements, need to pay attention to three points: First, the guest operating system type, to select “other Linux 4.X or later kernel 64 bits”, and second, memory and CPU range as high as possible, especially memory, I choose here is 8GB (real machine 24GB memory) Third, the hard disk space must be greater than 64GB, which is the hard requirements of UOS, if the standard installation will automatically jump out (the actual space use is not so large, this is The UOS for normal system operation purposes reserved), which is also higher than Windows requirements.
When configuring VMWare, you need to pay attention to the above points (click on the larger picture)
The next installation is much simpler, all visualization, except for a little longer time, the rest is almost no different from installing a normal piece of software. Before installation, you need to set up the system language, installation location and other information, after which uOS will automatically start installing.
The installation was fast and took about 7 minutes in the virtual machine, basically a level with Win7. During the installation process will loop through some of the small features of UOS, if you do not want to see, you can also go to other things.
Screenshot of installation process (click to see large rafter)
Because we’re using a virtual machine, UOS also popped up a reminder specifically before installing. To the effect that the virtual machine platform can not fully take full advantage of UOS performance, it is recommended that the physical machine installation. This does not bother with it, just continue to install.
If you use a virtual machine installation, you will see the deepin hint above, which shows that UOS has largely absorbed the technology of deep Linux
After installation, UOS prompts the user to restart, and when you re-enter, it’s the final setup process. There are mainly time zones, account password two major items, and then UOS began to close the operation, about half a minute later, into the login interface.

2UOS System Experience: Start, Desktop, and Start Menu
3. System experience
1) Start and sign in
The UOS start-up is cool, with a dynamic, breathing-effect color LOGO on the screen that flashes slowly over time. The speed of cold start and hot start varies greatly, where cold start takes about ten seconds, and Win7 is about a level. The hot start is fast enough, and it’s done in 2-3 seconds. It’s a real shock for us who are used to Windows!
Cool launch screen
The login interface integrates some of the Android and Windows features, and at first glance it looks like a system beautification theme from N years ago. Wallpapers are consistent with the current desktop, but like most mobile platforms, you can set up different wallpapers for the lock screen and desktop separately. In addition to time, date, and week, if there are songs playing on the system, they will also appear simultaneously on the lock screen, making it easy to pause or switch the current track.
Although the entire interface and Win10 is not the same, but and Windows users’ usage habits are not different, the first start is quite smooth. The biggest feeling is that the grinding frame in the middle is very eye-catching.
After entering your password and returning, you’ll see a performance alert again, still for the same reason – fear that the virtual machine will affect performance. This time, UOS offers two modes available – “effect mode” and “normal mode.” Our choice is still to ignore it and click directly on “Effect mode.” Of course, this is also a good thing, low machine can run more smoothly, much like Windows in the “appearance mode” and “performance mode” it!
UOS pops up prompt again because it’s a virtual machine installation
The desktop layout is similar to Windows, including start menus, icons, taskbar, quick launchers, sound, network, settings, time adjustments… all of the modules are where it should appear. After all, Windows is already in a monopoly, and it’s not a smart choice to make a difference on the interface, as happened to WPS years ago.
Somely similar layout to Windows (click to see the larger picture)
3) Start menu
The start menu uses a Win7-like design, a semi-transparent “glass” that’s cool, and is designed with full-color icons to give a completely different feel to Windows. When opened, the first thing you’ve seen is a recently used app, and below it’s all apps. Unlike Windows, UOS has grouped apps by default and looks very neat.
In the upper right corner of the menu is a “scale” button that, when clicked, turns into full-screen mode, much like the now Win10 set, one interface is used on the PC and one is used on the tablet. However, UOS does not have the Win10-like “tablet mode”, estimated to plug in the magnetic suction keyboard can not automatically switch. In terms of appearance and functionality, this full-screen mode of UOS is more similar to macOS’ LaunchPad, which can quickly list applications in the system.
Full Screen Start Menu
Click on the icon in the upper left corner to select by category (click to see the larger picture)
The search function is also very useful, in addition to the standard Chinese character input, you can also search through phonetic Chinese application, which is much more user-friendly than Win10. It also supports full spelling and initial search, which Win10 can’t do.
Support for pinyin search is very convenient, at least than Win10 is much better! (Click to see the larger picture)
The search bar doesn’t need to be clicked, as long as the start menu is open, you can enter it directly for the search. However, this is limited to the start menu, and the search in the window is not supported.
No need to click specifically on the search bar, input is automatically captured by the system
3UOS System Experience: Taskbar, File Management and Control Center
The taskbar supports two modes, Efficient Mode and Fashion Mode. The simplest understanding is that “efficient mode” is A Windows style, and “fashion mode” is a macOS style.
Pull the taskbar up to see the difference more clearly. The “Fashion Mode” icon is centered and all the modules exist as buttons for finger clicks. “Efficient Mode” is more like everyday use of Windows, small icons, compact arrangement, layout is more in line with pc users’ usage habits.
Two modes comparison of the taskbar
“Plug-in” is a more fun in UOS function, for example, you have the habit of “throwing garbage”, then you can put the recycling bin here, every time the shutdown is too troublesome, put the power button into it …. In short, this is a Windows does not have a feature, but really good use!
A fun feature of the “plug-in”
5) Multi-Label Explorer
Explorer uses a similar macOS style, or that sentence, in the basic framework to make too different, in fact, is not conducive to later promotion. The UOS Explorer interface does not have a reserved shortcut button, which means that these common operations depend on right or keyboard shortcuts, whether copied or pasted.
The window has a rounded design that is larger than macOS arc, and it has a big shadow like macOS, which is very cool. Usually the address bar will be reduced to a button, into the multi-level target, each level of folder will be displayed here, convenient for quick fallback. It also adds a feature that Windows doesn’t have – multi-label, where as long as you right-click on the folder and select Open in a new tab, the window will appear on the tab bar and you can switch with a click.
File support lists, icons, and windows-like preview panes. If your files are pictures, music, documents… and even add color tags (TADs) for later search.
File support TAG addition, easy and quick search
6) “Dark Mode” and “De-Blue Mode”
Like Win10 and macOS, UOS comes with a dark theme, and cooler than Win10, its dark mode automatically switches with time!
Dark mode for UOS
Comparing The Cow X is that its dark mode can be switched automatically over time
It also automatically adjusts the color temperature. But because we’re using virtual machines, we don’t see the actual effect. The visual inspection should be the ability to automatically switch color temperature sits based on the user’s location.
Auto-adjust color temperature
7) Control Center
UOS’s Control Center can set the system’s options, and visually, the overall setting is more refined than the Win10 setup. The whole interface presents a three-segment design, in addition to the more clear sense of hierarchy, but also do not need to switch when the east and west run. However, further improvements can be made in the details, and in some places they are not detailed enough. Of course, this is no wonder it, Linux features a lot, graphical interface writing is a very huge work, you can compare the other desktops of Linux such as KDE and Gnome, UOS is not bad!
4UOS system experience: monitors, virtual desktops, stores, and screen hot spots
8) System Monitor
The Task Manager for UOS is called System Monitor, with the performance zone on the left and the process area on the right. In addition to being able to see CPU, memory, network speed, and disk curves in real time, you can also perform operations like Windows to abort or suspend processes (a process state unique to Linux). The only inconvenience is that its startup needs to go to the shutdown page, and there doesnot seem to be a shortcut available. Of course you can pin it to the taskbar, if you use it a lot more!
UOS’s Task Manager
“System Services” is used to manage service items in the management system, and the specific usage is not much different from Win10. Put a comparison chart here, the design is still relatively easy to get to the top.
Comparison with Win10 Task Manager
9) Virtual Desktop
UOS’s virtual desktop is managed and switched through multitasking view, and it has a shortcut , Win-S. UOS can build up to four virtual desktops, and the taskbars and wallpapers between the different desktops are connected. For convenience, UOS also offers two sets of shortcuts, Win-W and Win-A, corresponding to switching within the current desktop and switching within all desktops, respectively.
Virtual desktop features
In addition, in UOS, there is a shortcut that I feel very good to use (Alt-plus) that can cycle between the same type of windows (say, explorer windows). This is much more convenient than Alt-TAB (the task switching key under Windows), which is a play out of the flowers.
Alt-plus can only be switched between similar windows
10) App Store
The App Store and many operating systems are a set-up, and of course it is also the trend of operating system development. Small editor want to experience the software installation under UOS, But… The page open is completely empty and should not be fit yet.
Store, Bug… It still looks empty.
Of course, as an operating system, you can also manually download the installation package. But to tell you the truth, Linux manual installation software is more complicated, in addition to the software resources originally not enough, some software needs to use the terminal input command line to install, not so friendly to ordinary users.
Manual download installation is of course no problem, but daily use, ecology is not as good as the Windows platform
11) Screen hot zone
Windows Aero Snap is a great design, dragging the window to the edge of the screen can be split screen, macOS refers to it, and so is UOS. UOS sets a hot zone in every corner of the screen, with a total of seven types of left, lower left, top-right, lower-right, left, right, and upper-seven, similar to Win10. However, from the actual trial situation, UOS this hot zone is more selective application, often not good, and it does not have Win10 autofill avoidance function, later there is some optimization space, the following is the operation of the motion.
System hot zone demonstration (motion picture)
5UOS built-in common apps
4. Built-in common apps
UOS has built-in general components such as schedule, input method, browser, calculator, music player, video player, and so on, which is one thing every system manufacturer is doing. Although the built-in application softens the functionality, it ensures that the new system can meet the basic needs of the user once it is installed.
The calendar contains Gregorian calendar, lunar calendar, festival, holiday, off-duty reminder, and like similar products, you can switch it to Year View, Month View, Weekly View, Day View as needed. Right-click date to create a new schedule and divide it into different schedule types, such as Work, Personal, And Other, as needed. Of course, these are just some basic features, some advanced features such as weather, schedule customization are not supported, and signature APP like macOS is launched on a regular basis, not to mention.
Built-in calendar module
The music player only supports local song playback and provides lyric display (local), track collection, and more. Of course, as a built-in music, such results have been very good, after all, everyone has a favorite music software, you do a good job can not be replaced by users!
Built-in music module
The design of the calculator is relatively simple, only one simple version. Provides historical viewing and calculated secondary editing, and all numbers are automatically added to the thousands for easy user reading. Brackets are a highlight of this small app, and at least the calculator (simple mode) that comes with macOS and Windows is not supported!
Screenshot function is very strong, including screenshots, screen two modules. Screenshots such as labels, text, arrows, shapes and other functions are readily available, as well as fuzzy, mosaic such as relatively “high-end” functions, which is still rare in free software.
Built-in screenshot tool
The recording screen provides GIF and MP4 formats, while supporting the visual display of mouse and keystrokes. Video volume and clarity are also excellent, in the free software, it is difficult to find a rival.
Record-recording is powerful, comparable to the average third-party software
In addition to the built-in Sunpinyin, which is known as the best use under Linux, the input method has accidentally added two five-pen input methods. As a five-pen old user, small editor is actually very excited, although there are not many people with five pens. But for those who have used five pens, it’s also hard to get back to Pinyin. The system has five input methods built in, which actually solves a big problem in the later part of the population.
Built-in input method
Write at the end
Judging from the trials of these days, this UOS is still very good. No matter the appearance, operation, smoothness, stability, basically already on par with Windows. In particular, many details are handled, including built-in password-free login (Win10 is activated by command), dark mode that automatically switches over time (Win10 requires manual switching), screen reminders after pressing the uppercase key (Win10 does not), multi-label in Explorer (Win10 does not), Directly open RAR (Win10 does not support), time-lapse screenshots (shortcut Ctrl and Prn screen, Win10 does not support) …, even the latest version of Win10 did not do.
Of course, for ordinary users, its shortcomings are also obvious, the lack of daily software, the game’s ecological environment greatly hinders the development of the system in the consumer market. In addition to the Original Bioware resources that the Linux platform originally did not have, even the transplanted applications are also largely versatile and weak. What’s more, UOS has not yet launched the app store, making the problem even more prominent.
Cool shutdown interface
Over the years, we are directly in the operating system by foreign dynamo elbow, regardless of whether you want to or not, Windows is the boss. But some time ago, Google’s suspension of cooperation with Huawei, Microsoft’s next Huawei notebook and other events, so that the hearts of the people. If there is no core technology, just from the hardware to achieve “domestic”, always can not get rid of foreign control. Although this UOS is still a long way from replacing Windows in an all-round way, but we still want to give it enough confidence, hope that after a period of development, UOS can really experience the test of the market, to the vast number of consumers!
The road of domestic operating system, a long way to go … (UOS shutdown screen)
