Elon Musk, chief executive of U.S. electric car maker Tesla, said on Twitter that an underground transport tunnel about 1.3 kilometers long in Las Vegas is expected to open next year as an alternative to reducing congestion in the city. The mass transit tunnel in Las Vegas was built by Musk’s new tunnel company, Bollinger. Musk has a number of future-oriented companies, including electric car company Tesla and Space Exploration Technologies, which is developing the next generation of heavy-lift vehicles.
The 48-year-old billionaire tweeted on December 27: “Bollinger has completed the first commercial tunnel system in Las Vegas, connecting the Las Vegas Convention Center to the Las Vegas Strip. ”
In a second tweet, he said he “hopes the tunnel will be fully operational from 2020.”
The Las Vegas Convention Center is a huge complex and is being further expanded, with the 1.3-kilometer tunnel making it easier for people to travel to and from the convention center and the Las Vegas Strip, the report said.
Las Vegas officials reportedly selected Musk’s Bollinger in March to design, build and manage two underground tunnels that use small, automated means of transporttor transportation to carry eight to 16 passengers per vehicle.
