BEIJING, Dec. 31 (Xinhua) — Netflix announced Monday that the company’s original movies and TV series will be more popular on the Netflix streaming platform in 2019 than other new ones. The most popular new feature on Netflix in 2019 was the comedy Murder Mystery, with the third season of Stranger Things coming in at number two.
To attract viewers and make them pay for subscriptions, Netflix has invested heavily in original content, as it has lost out on the rising streaming service in the race for some of its most popular, established pieces. Over the next two years, “The Office” and “Friends” were taken by NBCUniversal, which is owned by Comcast and Warner Media. In addition, some of the content that originally belonged to Disney will be pulled from Netflix as Disney launches its own streaming service.
Third-party content will remain an important part of the future Netflix strategy, with the popular sitcom “Seinfeld” set to hit the Netflix platform in 2021;
How does Netflix count when it comes to charting? Based on the number of accounts that movie or TV series have watched for at least two minutes in 28 days on Netflix this year, Netflix has produced the charts. Netflix argues that it is more reliable to use two minutes as a standard to assess popularity, and that it would be bad for longer-term content if you could use reading as a standard.
