Last month, a patent application for a roof windshield for Ford was made public, media reported. According to us Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) documents, the design features a windshield and rear window covering almost the entire roof. It is reported that the official name of the patent is “car roof bow”. As can be seen, the side-top railing is connected to the front and rear beams, which are locked in place by the “fingers” referred to in the patent.
It is assumed that the entire structure will be able to handle the energy generated in side collisions.
As you can see, the sketch in the patent application file shows a Ford Mustang, but don’t assume that the future Mustang will use the design.
In fact, many times patents are not deployed to mass-produced cars. But there is no denying that this near-full-glass roof is a very attractive design.
