According to the latest statistics released by Sigmaintell Consulting, global 8K LCD panel shipments are expected to reach 500,000 units by 2020, or 0.2% of global LCD panel shipments. Taiwan panel industry insiders say the production cost of 8K panels is still very high, which also limits its penetration in the consumer market. The industry insider said the current cost of producing an 8K panel is more than twice that of a 4K panel. Only when the price gap between the 8K and 4K models narrows to 1.3 times that the penetration of the 8K panel is increased.
Sources say Samsung Display, AU Optronics, Sharp and BOE, the industry’s leading panel makers, have all launched 8K panels, while China Star Optoelectronics Technology, a Chinese company, will join in 2020.
The 8K panel is currently primarily used in large-screen applications, with a total of 65/75/82/85/98/100 inches. But Group intelligence consults says 65-inch and 75-inch panels will account for 60-70 percent of the 8K panels shipped in 2020. Thanks to improved supply chains and lower production costs, Groupintelligence estimates that global 8K panel shipments will reach 5 million units by 2022, accounting for 2%.
