Phoronix analyzed the Linux kernel Git source tree on new year and found that the number of kernel developers had dropped in the past year, and the number of commits had fallen to its lowest level in years. In 2019, Linux kernel has 74,754 commits, the lowest number since 2013, 80,000 commits in 2017 and 2018, 77,000 in 2016, 7.5 in 2014 and 2015 Million.
There are 4,189 authors of these codes, down from 4,362 in 2018 and 4,402 in 2017. Over the past year, the kernel added 3,386,347 lines of code and removed 1,696,620 lines of code.
In addition to Linus Torvalds, the most prolific contributor to the kernel is David S. Miller, Chris Wilson, Yue Haibing (Huawei), Christoph Hellwig and Thomas Gleixner. The companies that contribute the most to the kernel are Intel and Red Hat.
