Japanese auction sells $1.08 million in tuna for second-highest price on record

A bluefin tuna sold for 193.2 million yen ($1.8 million) at an auction in Toyosu, Tokyo, after the Japanese New Year, the second-highest price on record, according to media reports. People familiar with the matter said the tuna, which weighed 276 kilograms (608 pounds) or about 700,000 yen per kilogram, was captured in the waters off Aomori Prefecture in northern Japan.

The winning bidder was Kiyoshi Kimura, head of the company that runs sushi chain Sushizanmai.

Last year, Mr. Kimura sold a tuna at auction for a record 333.6 million yen ($3.09 million), breaking his record set in 2013.
