It is well known that drinking coffee wakes up, but excessive caffeine intake can be fatal. The average content of a cup of coffee is about 100 milligrams, and the average 10 grams of caffeine may pose a fatal risk to the human body, so drinking 100 cups in a row can lead to an overdose. But that’s not to say you can drink it, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration recommends that the average healthy adult eat no more than four to five cups of coffee a day, which could have some side effects.
Dr. Albert Ahn, a physician at NYU Langone Medical Center, says most people drink coffee to cheer you up, but once you drink too much coffee, you start losing attention and people start to get more anxious and irritable.
And that’s all about the hormone adrenaline, which stimulates your adrenal hormones and makes you feel energetic and alert. But secreting too much hormones is not a good thing, especially if you suffer from anxiety disorders, which can stimulate or trigger panic attacks of all kinds, exacerbating anxiety.
Adrenaline in caffeine also boosts heart rate, which is why doctors advise you not to drink coffee if the heart beats irregularly. The risk is actually only available to real coffee fans, and at least two observational studies have found that drinking at least nine cups of coffee a day is at risk of arrhythmia.
It also comes with sleep problems, and caffeine is a double threat to sleep, blocking the neurochemical adenosine, a substance that tells the brain you’re tired. Caffeine also releases a mixture of stimulants, including epinephrine, dopamine and glutamate, to your brain, making you more energetic.
So after a sixth cup of coffee, it not only makes you feel awake, but also full of energy. But if you drink too much coffee, perhaps it won’t go away when you sleep.
In a previous study, researchers tested the sleep of 12 volunteers, some taking the equivalent of four cups of coffee, and others taking a placebo.
It was found that even six hours before bedtime, volunteers who swallowed caffeine pills had significantly fewer time in light sleep. The researchers believe this could have a negative effect on daytime activity.
It’s like getting stuck in a cycle where you can’t sleep because you drink too much coffee, and then you wake up in the morning because you don’t have a good rest and drink more coffee just to stay awake during the day.
If you don’t drink coffee after two o’clock, you won’t have trouble falling asleep. This is because caffeine has a half-life of about five hours, so most of its stimulation will fade before going to bed.
But coffee can actually do some health benefits, and studies have shown that it helps with memory, exercise and co-workers, but only if you limit it.
