Canada’s prime minister is adamant that the plane was shot down by Iran, Iran says rumors are “unlogical”

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said at a news conference that a Ukrainian passenger plane crashed in Iran was shot down by an Iranian surface-to-air missile. The crash came hours after Iran fired a missile at a U.S. military base in Iraq. Mr. Trudeau told a news conference that Canadian officials had learned from intelligence from themsedity and their allies that Ukraine’s international airline flight PS752 had been shot down by an Iranian surface-to-air missile.

“It may not be intentional. He added that international partners should be involved in the investigation and that “a thorough and credible investigation is very important.” Trudeau said Iranian authorities have expressed a desire to keep the plane’s black boxes in the country.

After Trudeau, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson issued a statement saying there was “information” that the plane had been shot down by an Iranian missile. “There is now a lot of information that the flight was shot down by an Iranian surface-to-air missile. This is probably unintentional. We are working closely with Canada and our international partners and now need a full and transparent investigation.”

Earlier in the day, a Ukrainian International Airlines passenger plane with 176 people on board crashed. Iranian authorities initially said a technical fault caused the crash, which was most likely caused by an engine fire. The Ukrainian Embassy in Tehran first ruled out the terrorist attack and later revised the statement, but did not mention the possible cause of the crash.

Ahead of Trudeau’s news conference, several U.S. officials also believe the plane was shot down. A U.S. official said Monday that two surface-to-air missiles were detected two minutes after the 737-800 aircraft from Tehran to Kiev was detected, according to satellite data. An explosion occurred shortly around the plane, the official said. Thermal signal data then showed that the plane was on fire when it went down.

U.S. officials with intelligence say the Ukrainian airliner was shot down by two Russian-made surface-to-air missiles (SA-15s).

But such a claim was denied by Iran. “Scientifically, the rumor that a missile cannot hit a Ukrainian aircraft is illogical. Ali Abedzadeh, head of Iran’s civil aviation authority, said.

“If a rocket or missile hits an aircraft, it will fall freely,” Abezadeh said, noting that the plane continued to fly for five minutes after takeoff. “The pilot tried to return to the airport, but failed. “How could it be for a plane to try to return to the airport after being hit by a rocket or missile?” he asked. ”

Iranian media reported on the 9th, there are witnesses on the ground and in a high-altitude aircraft to see, the Ukrainian flight has been on fire in the air. Separately, a video allegedly taken by bystanders showed flames from the plane crossing the sky before exploding into a fireball.

The jet, which had been flying for only three years, did not make an emergency call before it crashed and the global positioning transmission system was cut off in the air. An aviation accident investigator said this was a rare occurrence in a crash case.

U.S. President Donald Trump said Monday that he suspects the crash was not caused by mechanical problems, suggesting it may have been accidentally shot down by Iran. Asked what he thought of the crash, Trump said, “I have doubts about that.” “I don’t want to say that because other people have their suspicions,” but he added, “someone might have made a mistake on the other side … not our system. It has nothing to do with us. ”

Boeing, the Federal Aviation Administration and the Pentagon have not yet commented.

A total of 176 people were killed in the crash, including 82 Iranians, 63 Canadians, 11 Ukrainians, 10 Swedes, four Afghans, three Germans and three Britons.

The tragedy is reminiscent of a tragedy during the Crimean conflict in 2014. In July 2014, a Malaysia Airlines plane was shot down by a surface-to-air missile, which investigators eventually blamed on pro-Russian rebels.

The black box is damaged.

On the evening of the 8th local time, the Iranian crash investigation team released the preliminary report of the Crash of the Ukrainian plane. The report said that in the morning, when the plane flew to an altitude of 8,000 feet (2,400 meters) after take-off, the plane disappeared from radar and crashed from high altitude. The pilot did not receive a radio message about the abnormality.

The aircraft’s route indicates that the plane was initially travelling west from the airport border, turned right after a technical problem and was trying to return to the airport at the time of the crash. According to witnesses, the plane was on fire when it fell and exploded when it collided with the ground.

The report also noted that both the flight data recorder and the cockpit voice recorder were damaged, but that core memory appeared to be still accessible.

Under international law, since the crash took place in Iran, it was up to Iran to lead an investigation into the crash. Abezadeh said on the 9th that Iran may need outside help to decode the black box on the Ukrainian airliner because it is damaged.

“The black box of the Ukrainian Boeing 737 has been damaged. Ukrainian aviation experts arrived in Tehran today. We have a meeting with them. Starting tomorrow, they will begin decoding the data. He added that if their equipment could not get content from it, Iran would hand over the black boxes to “French or Canadian experts.”

The parties have made statements

A Downing Street spokesman said reports of the crash were “very worrying” and that the Uk was investigating. “I’m not going to speculate on that, but the reports we’re seeing are worrying and we’re urgently investigating it.” ”

Ukrainian President Zelensky invited Britain to join the crash investigation during a phone call with British Prime Minister David Johnson. In a statement, Mr. Zelensky’s office said Mr. Johnson supported the idea and stressed that the best British experts should be involved in the investigation.

Zelensky also reminded all parties that day, do not speculate on the cause of the crash. He has instructed the country’s attorney general to investigate the crash and has asked the authorities to test the seaworthiness of all Ukrainian civil aircraft.

Sweden’s foreign minister, Anne Lind, said no possible cause of the crash had been ruled out. Iran’s Civil Aviation Organization on the 9th invited Sweden to participate in the crash investigation. Lind said it was important to be “transparent” in the investigation, adding that she did not think there was a problem with the Iranian-led investigation.

Boeing Crisis

The crash comes after Boeing was caught in an unprecedented crisis over two crashes involving its best-selling 737 MAX model, which was grounded in March 2019.

The 737-800 crash was the previous generation of 737s. Boeing has built about 5,000 aircraft and has a good safety record. Ihor Sosnovskyi, vice president of Ukraine International Airlines, said in Kiev that the new Boeing aircraft, delivered in 2016, was in good condition and was last repaired on January 6.

“This is a tragedy, and we express our deep condolences to the crew, passengers and their families,” Boeing said in response to the accident. We are trying to reach out to our airline customers and support them through this difficult time. We are ready to help them any way we want.”
