On July 19, 2008, Apple opened the world’s 220th store in Sanlitun, Beijing, and the first Apple Store in China, just before the launch of the iPhone 3G and the opening of the Beijing Olympics. Now more than a decade ago, the number of Apple Stores in mainland China has soared to 42, covering 14 provinces and cities across the country, the latest of which is Apple Suzhou, which will land in the Suzhou Industrial Park in 2018.
Apple introduced a new retail store design in 2015, after the Genius Genius Bar, stainless steel walls, tiled floors were replaced by Genius Garden, limestone walls and terrazzo floors, along with more indoor green vegetation and “interactive” areas, a vibrant gathering place. Surrounded by a 6K video wall, it can be used to host a variety of “Today at Apple” courses, including the production of iTunes movies and the exclusive premiere of new music and music videos for Apple Music.
Most of the new Apple Stores, which began in 2015, have adopted new designs, but for those retail stores that opened earlier, in addition to renovating their original storefronts, some are moving due to factors such as limited in-store size.
The “Apple Sanlitun” located in The Sanlitun business district of Beijing belongs to the latter. Since last year, the building next to the former Sanliton Apple Store has been under construction, and with the removal of the facade, we have been able to get a glimpse of the new Apple Store. From the images, the new “Apple Sanliton” will feature carbon-fibre roofs like the Apple Park Visitor Center and Apple Stores such as Apple Park and Apple Michigan Avenue in Chicago, and, unsurprisingly, the interior will be equipped with “Interactive Workshops” such as “Genius Genius Park” “Discussion room” and other functional areas.
Judging by the work update released by the Beijing Municipal Planning and Natural Resources Commission in January, which has now been removed, the new Apple Sanlitun will open in March, which will also be Apple’s first flagship store in the Asia-Pacific region.
