While folding devices offer a lot of flexibility, collapsible phones like the Galaxy Fold raise questions about durability, according tomedia. By contrast, the two-screen Surface Neo and Surface Duo are more durable thanks to their hinged mechanism and two separate displays instead of a single flexible screen.
On both Surface Neo and Surface Duo, Microsoft uses a hinge mechanism that supports 360-degree wrapping, and allows apps such as e-books to run in “notebook mode” on one side of the Surface Neo. Hinges also allow applications to run in “tent mode” on Neo.
Last year, Microsoft filed a patent application with the World Intellectual Property Organization for an adjustable closed magnet with an auxiliary hinge device (ADJUSTABLEABLE MAGNET FOR HINGED DEVICE WITH ASSISTED OPEN). The patent details the various parts of the special body, as well as a schematic of a new hinge technology that could be used on Surface Neo or Duo.
Theoretically, this patent implementation can lead to a long- and smooth hinge experience.
