The students submitted nearly 30,000 such essays, and thousands of volunteer referees spent hours judging them. Entries were slowly screened until only 155 semi-finalists remained. Now, after FURTHER consideration by NASA, only nine finalists are still in the running.

NASA’s space hardware often uses inspiring naming schemes. Mars rovers, such as Spirit, OPOrtunity and Curiosity, in particular, follow this trend, so it’s not surprising that mars 2020 mars rover finalists are familiar with the final name.

This is the final list, including the name, grade group and the students who submitted the name:

Endurance, K-4, Oliver Jacobs, Virginia

Tenacity, K-4, EamonReilly, Pennsylvania

Promise, K-4, Amira Shanshiry, Massachusetts

Perseverance, 5-8, Alexander Mather, Va.

Vision, 5-8, Hadley Green, Mississippi

Clarity, 5-8, Nora Benitez, California

Ingenuity, 9-12, Vaneeza Rupani, Alabama

Fortitude, 9-12, Anthony Yoon, Oklahoma

Courage, 9-12, Tori Gray, Louisiana

“Thousands of students have shared their thoughts, a name that will make our rover team proud,” NASA’s Lori Glaze said in a statement. Thousands of volunteer time is part of the review process. Now is the time for public participation and expression of their favorite final nine finalists. “

But NASA needs the public’s help to choose the winner! Over the next few days, NASA will collect ballots on its Mars 2020 mission website, allowing the public to cast a vote for their favorite names.
