In 2017, Nintendo filed a lawsuit against MariCar, now known as Mari Mobility, in Tokyo, Japan, alleging that it used game IP, such as Mario Racing, for commercial activities without Nintendo’s consent, and a 2018 court ruled that MariCar 10 million yen in compensation to Nintendo. But because MariCar filed an appeal, the amount of compensation has risen to 50 million yen after a retrial.

MariCar’s use of Mario’s character costume was unfair competition, requiring compensation to talling 50 million yen from Nintendo and a halt to all unfair competition, according to a final judgment released today (January 29).
