AMS: Fireball across California night sky yesterday, confirmed to be spacecraft debris

Residents living in California saw a fireball pass through space Wednesday night local time and then decompose into bright pieces. But according to the American Meteor Society (AMS), this is not a meteor. “Based on the reports and videowe have received about the incident, we can confirm that this is not a natural fireball, but a re-entry of spacecraft debris,” AMS wrote in a statement on Thursday.

AmS has so far received as many as 60 witness reports. “I’ve never seen anything like it in my life, ” said one person familiar with the situation. The discovery sent the hashtag supted the hashtag soaring on Twitter as viewers shared their videos. Twitter user Stan Moroncini reported that it lasted at least 20 seconds.
