New Xbox adapter allows players to turn electric wheelchairs into game controllers

Microsoft’s previously launched dedicated game controller, The Verge, is no doubt a boon for disabled players, media outlet The Verge reported. And on Friday, a third-party loading tool took the controller to the next level, allowing players to turn their electric wheelchairs into game controllers. The box, known as the Freedom Wing adapter, connects the Xbox barrier-free controller to the wheelchair through its port. This means that the joystick that controls the wheelchair can be turned into a controller every day, which is especially useful for people who are used to joysticks and buttons.

The charity AbleGamers co-founded the device with ATMakers, a group of technology manufacturers and enthusiasts dedicated to assistive technologies. The Wing Freedom adapter is distributed through AbleGamers, and people can apply for grants on the AbleGamers website.

ATMakers found a company that makes printed circuit boards, which it said would sell for about $7, meaning that the gamer could build it on its own with all the other required materials, after finally publishing instructions for making the device. By watching the video below, you can get an overview of how to make it. Steve Spohn, chief operating officer of AbleGamers, told The Verge that the nine-pin connector needed to connect a wheelchair to the device is standard for a wheelchair joystick. Thus, in theory, the device seems to work with many wheelchairs on the market today.

Microsoft debuted the Xbox Barrier Controller in 2018 as a customizable option for disabled gamers. It has two large programmable buttons and 19 jacks that connect them to a variety of joysticks, buttons and switches, making it easier for more people to play on Xbox One and Windows 10 PCs.

Since its launch, the company has partnered with organizations such as the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to provide them with equipment. Earlier, a YouTube blogger even released a video instructing players on how to use Microsoft’s Xbox barrier-free controller with nintendo Switch. The $99 controller is designed to be flexible and compatible with as many devices as possible, and the Freedom Wing adapter is based on this philosophy.
