According to Western Digital’s latest roadmap, HDD drives will have 60TB capacity in 2026, more than four times the capacity of today. But the bad news is that 60TB also depends on SMR stacked disk technology, otherwise there will be only 50TB capacity, so in the future SMR hard disk will be valued, half of the future hard disk will be on SMR technology.
What is SMR technology? Simply put, SMR hard drives overlap some tracks, like roof tiles, the benefit is to increase storage density, increase capacity by 25% in traditional technology, but not small, because of the data stacking, can not be randomly written data, as long as the large cache to write continuously, while reliability will also decline.
Based on this, SMR hard drives are not popular with players, many people are deliberately avoiding SMR hard drives, but for HDD vendors such as Western Digital, increasing capacity by 25% makes them want to stop, and the larger the capacity of the hard disk, the more attractive SMR technology.
According to the latest roadmap released by Western Digital, SMR technology will continue to grow rapidly in the future, with a negligible share by 2020, but from 2021, almost 50% of hard drives will be on SMR technology by 2024.
