Despite attempts by the United States to change course, Germany appears ready to allow Huawei access to its 5G network, media reported. Members of the Christian Democratic Union, led by German Chancellor Angela Merkel, yesterday signed a document aimed at banning Huawei from seeking a settlement.
The document states that national actors who want to penetrate the network can do so through any device manufacturer, not just Huawei. It says these risks cannot be eliminated completely, but can be minimized through a comprehensive technical review. The document goes on to write that encryption secures the data being transferred.
Similar to the case in the UK, three German network operators are using technology from Huawei, so a total ban could mean they have to pay a high price and delay the introduction of 5G to their domestic customers. Like the UK, Germany wants to ensure that the network does not use only one company’s hardware.
