Scientists have discovered a giant species of ancient turtle, according to a new study published in the journal Scientific Progress, media BGR reported. The 2,500-pound “beast” is now scientifically known as TheStupendemys geous, which is the size of a medium-sized car.
The discovery of this turtle species dates back to the 1970s, but researchers have been able to determine from the latest fossil studies that they can reach such an alarming scale. The new fossils reveal the impressive ness of these turtles.
“Some of the stupendemys’ individual turtle shells reached nearly three meters, making it one of the largest turtle species ever species,” Marcelo S?nchez, who led the study, said in a statement. “
In addition to their incredible size, another interesting thing about these ancient turtles is that their shells have secret features: male turtles have large horns in their shells, which may have been used to fight other male turtles for mating opportunities, or to defend against natural predators. As for their diet, these giant sea turtles are known to feed mainly on fish and other aquatic organisms.
