When a student ID is added to the Wallet app, student users can replace the physical card by approaching the iPhone or Apple Watch near the reader. Contactless student ID cards can be used wherever physical identification cards are required.

It is understood that Santa Clara University, located near Apple’s Cupertino headquarters, was one of the universities working with Apple and its partner Transact during the contactless student ID pilot project.

The university expects most of its 5,500 undergraduates to have access to the mobile student ID system by the end of the year.

Apple is understood to have announced the contactless student ID iPhone program for the first time at the 2018 Global Developers Conference and launched its first electronic student ID in October of that year. Later, it added several partner universities, including Marshall University, Clemson University, Duke University, University of Oklahoma, University of Alabama, Georgetown University, University of Tennessee, University of Kentucky, University of San Francisco, University of Vermont, Arkansas State University, South Dakota State University, Norfolk, University of Louis, University of North Alabama and Caowang University.
