Tesla is working with California power company PG and E to replace the outdated peak power plant with a new battery facility, making it the world’s largest battery plant, media reported. Peak power plants are typically natural gas plants that only add power to meet peak power demand for a short period of time, making them often the most expensive power suppliers of all grids, costing millions of dollars a day.
Replacing a battery-power plant would mean a more sensitive grid, which could save PG and E millions of dollars, just as Tesla’s Hornsdale battery plant in Australia, which saves millions of dollars for utilities there.
Monterey County officials approved the plan yesterday (February 26 local time) that the batteries would be housed in an existing power plant that could be connected using the existing grid. The huge battery is expected to store renewable energy from solar and wind energy, and Tesla expects to be ready and operational by the end of the year.
