AMD last night released the AM4 platform’s Ryzen 9 3950X processor, 16-core 32 thread, and TR40 platform’s Ryzen Threadripper 3rd generation processor, 24-core, 32-core, mainly for enthusiasts. Threadripper’s three-generation processors are available in two, as follows:
ThreadRipper 3960X: 24 Core 48 Thread, Base frequency 3.8GHz, acceleration frequency up to 4.5GHz, secondary cache 12MB, third-level cache 128MB, thermal design power consumption of 280W.
ThreadRipper 3970X: 32 Core 64 Thread, Base frequency 3.7GHz, acceleration frequency up to 4.5GHz, secondary cache 16MB, third-level cache 128MB, thermal design power consumption of 280W.
Compared with the second generation of the same core thread number of 2970WX, 2990WX, the reference frequency increased by 800MHz, 700MHz, acceleration frequency has been increased by 300MHz, the second-level cache capacity unchanged, the third-level cache doubled, thermal design power consumption only increased by 30W.
In terms of performance, although the maximum number of cores is no more than the level of the second generation, but Threadripper three-generation processor base frequency, acceleration frequency significantly increased, coupled with The Zen2 architecture of the IPC improvement, so 3960X, 3970X CineBench R20 multithreaded performance increased by 30%, respectively, 61%, productivity creation performance can be improved by 30-32%, 44-61% in different projects.
Unfortunately, AMD doesn’t release a comparison with its rival Core X-Series processors, and given that the new generation of Core X, codenamed Cascade Lake-X, has not yet been released, AMD probably doesn’t have accurate performance data.
But don’t worry about AMD will lose, the largest number of cores and frequency of the competitors’ products change little, but AMD’s Threadripper 3960X, 3970X not only the core number is far more, single-core performance is also greatly improved, the previous generation of processors can easily win more than less, now will only have a greater advantage.
Perhaps so confident, AMD’s pricing on the Threadripper 3960X and 3970X is also more confident, with the 24-core version also costing 106999 yuan and the 32-core TR 3970X reaching 15,299 yuan ($1999 overseas), higher than last year’s 2TR990WX listing price.
Considering intel’s sharp price reduction series for this year’s Core X Series, the Core i9-10980X, i9-10940X, i9-10920X, i9-10900X official 1000 wholesale price is $979, $784, $689, $590, respectively. Compared with the previous generation of corresponding models reduced by 51%, 43%, 42%, 40%!
So it’s interesting to see AMD’s high-end processors at $1,000, or even $2,000, while friend products fall below $1,000, which is rare.
Don Woligroski, amd’s desktop processor market technology manager, also said, “It’s time for us (AMD) to stand alone in a market of more than $1,000, and there’s nothing we can compete with, and it’s interesting in 2019 and 2020.” “
