As more cases of COVID-19 emerge in the U.S., some companies are asking employees to work from home as much as possible,media reported. But this affects the work of people who need to work on the ground, including many who are paid by the hour. In response, Microsoft said today that it would continue to pay all hourly workers in Puget Bay and Northern California the same wages as usual, even if working fewer hours were reduced.
The statement singled out Microsoft’s employees in the Puget Bay area and Northern California, though the company said it would explore how to move forward in a similar way in the U.S. and other parts of the world affected by the new crown.
Brad Smith, Microsoft’s president, said in a blog post that employees in home-office areas have been asked to work from home.
Smith added: “While efforts to protect public health need to be accelerated, the economy cannot slow down.” As a company, we are committed to making public health our top priority and doing everything we can to address the economic and social impact of the new crown. We understand that large employers can afford something small businesses cannot afford, but we believe that large employers who are able to afford such measures should consider doing so. “
