At Google I/O 2019, Google announced that Google Lens can analyze restaurant menus and mark popular dishes. This feature is now integrated into Google Maps. Currently, google Maps lists that people take photos of menus and upload them to restaurants are still common. But now when viewing such images on Android, there is a suggested “Explore Dishes” icon at the bottom. The lens icon also appears in the upper right corner to initiate a visual search.
Google Lens highlights popular dishes in orange with a star icon. This virtual overlay helps preserve the description and price. There is a “Hot Dishes in Image” turntable on the bottom page. Tap to bring up photos and comments about the item in Google Maps to provide additional content by matching text to a large amount of crowdsourced data.
This integration allows users to open business information in Google Maps when they visit a new location. It eliminates the need for users to launch the Google Lens and take a picture manually. At the same time, it helps highlight the ads that businesses are running in Maps. Google does not currently offer the feature for iOS devices.
